The Bottom Line - Thera-Med Universal Cold Packs
The Cold Pack eases my aches, pains, burns
and sprains. Love it!
If asked for 10 words
with which I would describe myself, klutz would be on that list. I’m
always spraining something or cutting myself while cooking or doing
crafts. And I burn myself a few times a week on the fireplace, curling
iron, or steam from the microwave. The burns are the pits because they
hurt and throb constantly with no relief. Only cold and time help to ease
the pain. My husband purchased the Thera-Med Universal Cold Pack
for me when I broke my wrist, but it gets the most use to soothe burns.
The Cold Pack is used for reducing pain and swelling. The main section
which contains the cooling gel is about 10 inches in length and 5 inches
wide. One of the ends of the flexibly vinyl pack has a 12-inch, H-shaped
strap which is covered on the underside with soft Velcro. There are four
scratchy Velcro pieces on the front of the main section to which the
straps are fastened. So if I hurt my kneecap I would wrap the main section
of the pack around the kneecap then wrap the strap around the back of my
leg and then stick the end of the strap to the scratchy parts of the
Velcro so that it is held in place. The Cold Pack and strap together are
over 20 inches in length and long enough to fit around nearly any knee,
elbow, or ankle.
The Cold Pack should be frozen for at least 2 hours before the first use.
Mine is stored in the freezer so it’s ready whenever it’s needed. The
gel doesn’t freeze solid so you can smoosh it around and wrap it easily
around the affected area. I like that I can take it to bed with me and not
worry about it dripping or leaking like a baggie of ice would. It does
sweat a bit after hitting the warmer air but not excessively where you
have to worry about it ruining bedding or furniture.
It’s super cold direct from the freezer so a cloth or clothing should be
placed between it and skin if used directly from the freezer. Within 10
minutes it warms up enough so that it’s not painfully cold but after a
half hour it doesn’t feel cold enough for me. However, doctors recommend
only 20-30 minutes of therapy every 2 hours so it works just how the
doctor ordered.
The Cold Pack works really well for the burns I get on my hands from my
klutzy acts. It can be folded in half and secured with the straps to make
a taco to stick my burnt fingers in. This really helps to soothe the pain
so I can get some relief and sleep.
Warning
Cold shouldn’t be used by people with circulatory problems unless
prescribed by a physician. Don’t apply to broken skin. Discontinue use
if COLD PACK leaks. If condition persists - consult your physician.

Durable, Flexible, and COLD!

The Bottom Line - Thera-Med Universal Cold Packs
Great all-purpose cold
pack.
These cold packs are
strong and the straps work well. After some time in the freezer they have
a lot of cooling power. They are not chemical packs - you need to put them
in the freezer. They are reusable.
I've used these cold packs in several places on my body: wrists, ankles,
forearms, my back... and they are a longtime favorite.
They have enough length, including the straps, to reach around a thigh,
but probably not an entire torso. The pack itself is about 10 inches long
and 4 or 5 inches wide, so it covers a pretty good area. It can completely
encircle a wrist or ankle no problem. The dual straps make it easy to
attach to various places. The gel is soft but not completely liquidy; it
molds to your body easily.
It takes a while for them to get completely cold. Probably over an hour in
the freezer. Once they are frozen up, they have a LOT of cooling power. I
find them too cold to put directly on my skin. I usually put some cloth in
between.
Tip: I have cut the toes out of a pair of tube socks and I use the sock as
a sleeve for my arm or ankle before putting the cold pack on. This keeps
my skin from freezing but still allows the full cooling power to penetrate
over time.
Great cold pack overall. With two of these, you should be pretty much
covered. Every home and office should have a pair in the freezer for
aches, pains, & injuries.
